Public Outrage Erupt as Shadrack Sibiya Suffer a Massive Blow Behind Bars

South Africa’s suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya, remains in custody after appearing before the Randburg Magistrates’ Court in connection with serious sexual offence allegations.

The 59-year-old senior police officer appeared in court on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, following his arrest by members of the Madlanga Commission’s Recommendations Task Team. He faces five charges, including rape, human trafficking and the alleged sexual grooming of a child.

The case has attracted significant public attention because of Sibiya’s senior position within the South African Police Service and the nature of the allegations brought against him. However, the accusations remain before the courts, and Sibiya is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Contrary to claims that Sibiya’s bail has already been denied, the latest court reports indicate that his formal bail application was postponed until 29 September 2026. The State has confirmed that it intends to oppose bail. Sibiya will remain in custody at the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria until the next court proceedings.

According to the allegations outlined in the charge sheet, Sibiya is accused of sexually grooming a 16-year-old girl between July and August. He also faces an allegation of raping an 18-year-old woman at a hotel in Sandton in May 2026. The case includes claims involving explicit communication with the minor.

The National Prosecuting Authority has raised concerns about witness protection and intelligence suggesting that Sibiya could potentially attempt to escape if held at a police station. Authorities have also indicated concerns about possible witness intimidation. These matters are part of the State’s position as it prepares to oppose bail.

The allegations have intensified public discussions about gender-based violence, the protection of minors and accountability within law enforcement. As a senior police official, Sibiya’s case has attracted scrutiny from members of the public who expect those entrusted with protecting communities to be held accountable under the law.

Nevertheless, the allegations must be tested through the judicial process. The court will consider the evidence and arguments presented by both the prosecution and the defence before making decisions in accordance with the law.

Sibiya is expected to return to the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 29 September for the formal bail proceedings. Until then, the case remains ongoing, and no finding of guilt has been made.
