Former president Jacob Zuma has reiterated a position that EFF leader Julius Malema has reportedly advocated for some time: undocumented immigrants should be properly documented so that authorities can establish who is residing in the country and ensure that anyone suspected of breaking the law can be held accountable through the legal system.
The issue has renewed debate around immigration management, law enforcement and the importance of maintaining accurate records of people living within South Africa. Advocates of proper documentation argue that authorities need reliable information about residents, including foreign nationals, to effectively administer immigration laws and investigate alleged criminal activity.
The comments have also sparked discussion about the way political statements are received by different groups. The commentary argues that similar views should be judged consistently, regardless of whether they come from Zuma, Malema or another political leader.
It further suggests that personality, political loyalty and ethnic affiliation can sometimes influence how people respond to statements made by public figures. According to this argument, the substance of a policy position should remain the focus, irrespective of who presents it.
The debate reflects South Africa’s continuing discussions over undocumented immigration, border management, documentation and the enforcement of the country’s laws.
