From Prison Cell To Mayoral Race: Shivambu’s Party Reportedly Eyes Ex-Criminal Skeem GP For Mayor

As the Afrika Mayibuye Movement strengthens its preparations for the 2026 local government elections, Themba Lukhele Nzimande, often known as Skeem GP, is emerging as a major figure within the movement. Skeem GP is a former prisoner who is now running for political office.

Skeem GP has been repeatedly connected to a potential mayoral candidacy in Ekurhuleni under the leadership of Floyd Shivambu, according to political negotiations that have taken place in the province of Gauteng. Especially in township areas, where he commands significant grassroots support and public awareness, his expanding prominence inside the movement has drawn attention. This is especially true in the township neighbourhoods.

Lukhele was born and reared in Katlehong, and he initially became well-known for his participation in criminal activities when he was a young man. Soon after, he acknowledged to committing a number of crimes, including robbery, abduction, and impersonating a law enforcement official. He was known on the streets as “Skeem GP.” His participation in illicit activities ultimately resulted in his incarceration in the Boksburg Correctional Centre.

Lukhele had a significant personal makeover after his release, reframing himself as a youth mentor, philanthropist, and motivational speaker. He also began participating in charitable activities. During this time, he got active in community outreach efforts that were designed to discourage young people from indulging in criminal behaviour and drug misuse.

The narrative of his journey to recovery struck a chord with a great many of South Africans, especially in township areas where issues of unemployment and criminality continue to be significant problems. Lukhele’s public prominence was further strengthened by the publishing of his novels, Through It All and King Pin. In these books, he reflected on his criminal history and cautioned young people about the repercussions of being involved in gangs and engaging in unlawful activities.

Podcasts like Against the Wall and Ringz & Bearings were among the mediums through which he extended his sphere of influence into the media business. He was able to cultivate a devoted following throughout the nation with the assistance of the programs, which included interviews with formerly incarcerated individuals, influential members of the community, and contentious public personalities.

Lukhele subsequently became a member of the famous television program Most Wanted on, which focuses on criminal activity. On the show, he used his history and expertise on the streets to contribute to initiatives that raise awareness about criminal activity and issues that are relevant to justice.

Political commentators feel that Skeem GP’s rising popularity and his ability to interact with inhabitants of the township might make him a viable contender in Ekurhuleni politics. This is despite the fact that the Afrika Mayibuye Movement has not formally declared its candidates for the position of mayor.

It is a reflection of the complicated realities of redemption, leadership, and political power in modern South Africa that his path from a convicted criminal to a political mobiliser continues to get acclaim as well as critique.
