North West businessman Brown Mogotsi has been arrested after allegations that he staged an assassination attempt in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg. He now faces a charge of defeating the ends of justice following the incident that drew wide public attention.
The arrest took place on Friday evening when a multidisciplinary team from the South African Police Service executed a J50 warrant of arrest. Police confirmed that Mogotsi was taken in shortly after he had given testimony before the Madlanga Commission.
Authorities say the case stems from an alleged staged shooting in Vosloorus, where Mogotsi reportedly claimed there was an attempt on his life. Investigators later began to question the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, early findings show that the firearm involved may be linked to other serious crimes. These include cases of murder and attempted murder in different parts of Gauteng. This development has raised further concerns in the ongoing investigation.
Mogotsi is expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 18 May 2026. Police say additional charges could still be considered depending on the outcome of further investigations.
The matter has attracted public interest due to Mogotsi’s links to recent testimony before the Madlanga Commission. Authorities say they are continuing with investigations to establish the full facts surrounding the alleged staged attack.
The case remains under investigation, and more updates are expected as court proceedings continue.
