Tensions between political rivals in KwaZulu-Natal have intensified following remarks by Nomagugu Simelane-Mngadi, who accused supporters of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) of being responsible for the killing of an African National Congress (ANC) struggle icon in the Ndwedwe area.

Simelane-Mngadi, a Member of the Executive Council (MEC) in the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government, made the remarks during a recent public engagement, where she strongly criticized the IFP and its alleged role in ongoing political violence in parts of the province. She claimed that the killing of the unnamed ANC veteran was not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of politically motivated attacks.

“The people who continue to terrorize our communities and silence progressive voices must be exposed,” Simelane-Mngadi said. “We cannot ignore the pain of losing one of our struggle heroes at the hands of those who seek to destabilize our movement.”

The African National Congress (ANC) has long maintained that political violence remains a concern in certain regions of KwaZulu-Natal, particularly in rural areas where historical rivalries persist. Ndwedwe, located north of Durban, has been identified as one of the hotspots where tensions between political parties occasionally flare up.

However, the IFP has strongly rejected the allegations. Party representatives described Simelane-Mngadi’s comments as inflammatory and unsubstantiated, warning that such statements risk deepening divisions within already fragile communities. The party reiterated its commitment to peaceful political engagement and called on leaders to exercise restraint.

Political analysts say the exchange highlights the fragile nature of inter-party relations in KwaZulu-Natal, a province with a long history of violent clashes between the ANC and IFP dating back to the late apartheid and early democratic eras. While significant progress has been made in fostering political tolerance, sporadic incidents continue to undermine stability.

Community leaders in Ndwedwe have appealed for calm, urging both parties to avoid rhetoric that could incite further violence. They emphasized the need for law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough and impartial investigations into the killing to ensure accountability.

As the situation unfolds, calls are growing for provincial leadership to prioritize dialogue and conflict resolution mechanisms. Observers warn that failure to address such tensions could have broader implications for governance and social cohesion in KwaZulu-Natal.

The South African Police Service has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
