Magasela Mzobe, the former Head of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party Presidency, has officially stepped down from his position, sparking speculation about tensions within the party’s leadership. While insiders link his resignation to a reported fallout with former president Jacob Zuma, Mzobe stated that his departure is motivated by personal priorities, particularly focusing on managing his football club, Newcastle All Stars, in the ABC Motsepe League.

In a brief statement, Mzobe said his decision came “after careful reflection,” emphasizing the need to devote his full attention to the club and its community. He framed the move as a commitment to football development, a passion he has long supported.

Despite his explanation, several senior MK Party sources claim the resignation stems from strategic disagreements with Zuma over the party’s national program and communication strategies ahead of upcoming elections. These sources suggest clashes over high-profile engagements contributed to a breakdown in relations between Mzobe and Zuma.

The MK Party has not publicly addressed the underlying reasons for his exit, instead thanking Mzobe for his service and wishing him success. Analysts note the party’s measured response reflects an effort to maintain unity amid internal upheaval.

Mzobe’s departure is the latest in a series of shifts within the MK Party, highlighting challenges in balancing rapid growth with internal cohesion. His resignation raises questions about the stability of Zuma’s inner circle and whether further changes may follow.

An interim replacement is expected while the party deliberates on a permanent appointment. Mzobe has not ruled out a return to politics in the future but insists his immediate focus will remain on advancing football development in the region.
