Two suspects allegedly linked to a cash-in-transit robbery in Verulam were shot and killed during a police operation in Edendale, KwaZulu-Natal, while a third suspect managed to escape. The confrontation occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 24 February 2026, following an intelligence-led effort by police to track down individuals believed to have been involved in the robbery.
According to police information, the initial robbery took place on Monday, 23 February 2026, in Verulam. It is alleged that at least 12 suspects intercepted a cash delivery vehicle at the intersection of Jabu Ngcobo and Fairview roads. During the incident, the group reportedly disarmed security personnel, seizing three firearms. The suspects then fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. The incident triggered a coordinated response from multiple police units, who immediately began tracing those believed to be responsible.
Acting on gathered intelligence, police were led to a residence in Nhlazatshe, Shayamoya, in the Edendale area. Officers approached the property as part of an operation aimed at apprehending the suspects. During the attempted arrest, a shootout ensued between police and the alleged suspects. Two individuals were fatally wounded in the exchange of gunfire, while a third suspect reportedly fled the scene and remains at large.
Police confirmed that no officers were injured during the operation. At the scene, authorities recovered three firearms, including two rifles and one handgun, along with several rounds of ammunition. Investigators also seized a Volkswagen Polo believed to have been used during the robbery, as well as a bakkie fitted with multiple number plates, which may have been intended to evade identification.
Authorities have stated that investigations are ongoing and that efforts to locate and arrest the remaining suspects are continuing. Police emphasized their commitment to ensuring public safety and bringing all individuals allegedly involved in the Verulam cash-in-transit robbery to justice.
