Bobby Motaung Reveals Role in Signing Doctor Khumalo for Chiefs

The story of Doctor Khumalo’s rise to legendary status at Kaizer Chiefs is often told through the lens of his on-field magic, but the behind-the-scenes maneuver that secured his signature is equally dramatic. Bobby Motaung recently shed light on the intense tug-of-war that preceded the midfielder’s professional debut in the late 1980s. While Khumalo was already a standout in the youth ranks, his transition to the first team was nearly derailed by interest from cross-town rivals Orlando Pirates.

Motaung and Khumalo shared a deep personal history, having played together in the developmental structures long before the bright lights of the senior stage. This proximity gave Motaung a front-row seat to Khumalo’s immense potential, but it also made him aware of how close the club was to losing him. The threat from Pirates was genuine and immediate, fueled in part by family connections that bridged the two rival clubs. Motaung’s own aunt, Ausi Moipone, held influence at Pirates and had organized tournaments that gave the Buccaneers a perfect view of Khumalo’s capabilities.

Realizing that Pirates were ready to swoop in, Motaung took decisive action to protect the club’s interests. During a trip to Brits, he left Khumalo tucked away in a room to ensure he wouldn’t be approached while Motaung rushed back to Johannesburg. His mission was to convince his father, Kaizer Motaung, that the young playmaker needed to be promoted and signed to a senior contract immediately. There was no room for hesitation; the talent was too rare to risk losing to their fiercest competitors.

The gamble paid off. Khumalo was brought into the senior fold, marking the beginning of an era that would see him earn 397 appearances and score 75 goals. Between 1987 and 2004, the man nicknamed 16V became the heartbeat of the team and a national icon. Motaung reflects on this period as a turning point that changed the trajectory of the club. It was a moment where quick thinking off the pitch ensured that one of South Africa’s greatest footballing stories would be written in the colors of Kaizer Chiefs.
