A businessman from KwaZulu-Natal has ignited a significant public discourse by alleging corruption and abuse of power against the province’s police commissioner during a widely circulated televised interview.

In a January segment aired on NewzRoom Afrika, Calvin Mathibeli, who identifies as originally from Lesotho, accused Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi of being “captured by mafias” and misusing his authority. He made serious allegations of corruption and even unlawful killings; however, he did not offer any verifiable evidence to support his claims during the interview.

The public response has been polarized, with viewers expressing varying degrees of concern and caution regarding the seriousness of these allegations. Legal experts indicate that such significant accusations could lead to investigations should formal complaints be filed with oversight entities. So far, there has been no official inquiry announced in connection with Mathibeli’s statements.

Mathibeli’s story, outlining his rise from Lesotho to establishing a business in KwaZulu-Natal, has also attracted attention. While some find his journey motivational, commentators stress that his personal achievements should not overshadow the need for a thorough and evidence-based evaluation of his allegations. The situation has renewed calls for transparency within law enforcement, as public trust hangs in the balance.
