ANC Youth League Urged to Demand Gwede Mantashe’s Resignation After Parliamentary Row

Calls are mounting for the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) to demand the immediate resignation of Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe, following a highly controversial exchange in Parliament earlier today. Critics argue that Mantashe’s behavior during proceedings demonstrates that he is unsuited to continue in office.
During the parliamentary session, Mantashe became embroiled in what observers described as theatrical and disruptive conduct, drawing sharp criticism from opposition parties and civil society groups. Analysts say such behavior undermines legislative decorum and raises questions about his capacity to manage ministerial responsibilities.

The ANCYL, which has historically positioned itself as a vocal advocate for accountability within the ANC, faces growing pressure to take a public stance. Political commentators suggest that a formal call for Mantashe’s resignation would signal that the youth wing is serious about ethical governance and generational renewal within the party.

“The ANCYL risks losing credibility if it remains silent,” said a political analyst. “Ministerial leadership requires decorum, competence, and respect for parliamentary processes — qualities Mantashe’s recent actions appear to compromise.”

Opposition parties were quick to seize on the incident, asserting that Mantashe’s antics are symptomatic of broader disciplinary and governance challenges within the ANC. They argue that continued inaction could further erode public confidence in the government’s commitment to accountability and effective service delivery.

While Mantashe has yet to respond to calls for his resignation, the debate raises broader questions about the role of senior ministers in upholding parliamentary standards and the extent to which political theatrics should influence perceptions of leadership fitness.

The coming days are expected to test the political resolve of the ANCYL, with the public and media closely watching whether it will challenge a senior ANC figure or maintain strategic silence.
