A high-profile law enforcement operation shut down a main road in Durban’s Point area on Friday night as police targeted crime hotspots in the city centre.
Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, led the multidisciplinary raid on Dr Pixley kaSeme Street on 13 February 2026.
The operation brought together the South African Police Service, Home Affairs officials, and inspectors from the Department of Employment and Labour. Teams conducted stop-and-searches, inspected liquor outlets, and checked for undocumented foreign nationals.
Speaking to officers before the raid, Mkhwanazi emphasized the need for a strong police presence. He said authorities must make criminals fear operating in the province and ensure that police remain the primary force for public safety.
Police stated that the main goals of the operation were to seize illegal firearms and drugs. The raid forms part of broader efforts to bring stability to high-crime areas in the city.
