The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has vowed to “punish” the African National Congress (ANC) at the ballot box, with party leader Julius Malema declaring that the next local government elections will serve as a decisive test for the governing party. Malema made the remarks as the EFF unveiled what it described as a comprehensive political strategy aimed at expanding its influence and challenging the ANC’s dominance in municipalities across South Africa.

Addressing party supporters and members during the launch of the EFF’s campaign strategy, Malema accused the ANC of failing to deliver basic services and losing touch with the needs of ordinary citizens. He argued that growing dissatisfaction with service delivery, corruption allegations, and governance challenges had created an opportunity for the EFF to position itself as a viable alternative.

Malema said the EFF would intensify grassroots mobilisation, focusing on communities struggling with poor infrastructure, water shortages, unemployment, and housing backlogs. He emphasised that the party’s campaign would prioritise direct engagement with voters through community meetings, door-to-door visits, and public awareness programmes designed to highlight what he described as the ANC’s failures in local governance.

“The upcoming local government elections will be a decisive moment for South Africa’s democracy,” Malema told supporters. “Our mission is to ensure that communities hold the ANC accountable for years of unfulfilled promises and poor administration.”

The EFF leader further outlined plans to strengthen the party’s organisational structures at municipal level, including the recruitment of new members and the training of local representatives. According to Malema, the party aims to increase its control of municipalities and influence coalition governments where it does not secure outright majorities.

Political analysts have noted that local government elections are often influenced by service delivery performance and community-level governance, areas where opposition parties frequently challenge the ruling party. The EFF has previously positioned itself as a strong critic of the ANC, particularly on issues relating to economic transformation, land reform, and anti-corruption measures.

Meanwhile, the ANC has acknowledged the challenges facing municipalities but maintains that it is implementing reforms to improve service delivery and governance. Party officials have repeatedly urged voters to support the ANC, citing its historical role in South Africa’s democratic transition and ongoing development initiatives.

As political parties begin preparing for the next round of local government elections, the contest is expected to intensify, with the EFF seeking to capitalise on public dissatisfaction while the ANC works to retain its electoral stronghold. The elections are widely viewed as a crucial indicator of shifting political dynamics and voter sentiment ahead of future national polls.
