Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema has commented on the upcoming leadership contest within the African National Congress, naming Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula as the current frontrunner to succeed President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Speaking in December 2025, Malema stated that Deputy President Paul Mashatile is still campaigning but trails Mbalula in the race. He also addressed speculation about businessman Patrice Motsepe, criticizing Mbalula for dismissing Motsepe’s prospects publicly.
Malema further noted that ANC Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli has defended Ramaphosa in parliamentary settings, though he did not explicitly endorse him for a specific party position. These remarks come amid ongoing internal debates over leadership ahead of the ANC’s national elective conference in 2027.
The ANC has not formally responded to Malema’s comments. The EFF has previously expressed openness to joining a future Government of National Unity should there be a shift in the ruling party’s leadership.
