Civil society groups and researchers have backed former Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), telling Parliament the unit was draining resources that could be better used elsewhere.

During public hearings on Wednesday before the parliamentary ad hoc committee on police corruption, Dr. Jean Redpath of the Dullah Omar Institute stated that Mchunu acted within his powers to direct policing policy and strategy. She questioned the PKTT’s effectiveness and supported the minister’s authority to reshape operational priorities.

However, MK Party MP David Skosana defended the unit, arguing it successfully reduced political murders in KwaZulu-Natal and should not have been shut down.

The submissions reflect divided views on the controversial move, which is a key focus of the committee’s investigation into alleged corruption and political interference in the police.
