Former Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize Throws Hat Into ANC Leadership Ring, Check Out

Dr. Zweli Mkhize, a former Minister of Health, has officially put his name forward to contest for leadership positions within the African National Congress (ANC). This move signifies his intention to be a key player in guiding the party, which is currently navigating internal disagreements and seeing its support among voters decrease. His announcement comes at a crucial time, just before the ANC’s next major conference where new leaders will be chosen. This conference is seen as a vital opportunity for the ruling party to decide on its future direction, especially as many South Africans express growing dissatisfaction with its performance.

Mkhize is a well-known figure in ANC politics and has previously held the position of treasurer-general. He has now confirmed he is ready to take on a leadership role at the highest level of the organization. Many observers see his decision as an effort to influence the party’s attempts at renewal. The ANC is under considerable pressure to regain public trust after experiencing electoral losses and facing ongoing concerns about how the country is managed, issues of corruption, and a lack of accountability.

Speaking to ANC members and supporters, Mkhize stated that the party needs leaders who are “experienced, disciplined, and united” to effectively reconnect with communities and win back the confidence of voters. He stressed the importance of the ANC returning to its core principles while also urgently addressing significant societal problems like joblessness, poverty, the gap between the rich and the poor, and the decline in public services. According to him, any real renewal of the party must involve tangible improvements in the everyday lives of ordinary South Africans.

Before his time as Minister of Health, where he was instrumental in managing South Africa’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mkhize served as the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal. However, his political career faced a significant challenge in 2021 when he had to step down from his ministerial position. This followed allegations connected to a controversial contract for communications services with a company called Digital Vibes. While Mkhize has consistently denied any personal financial gain from this deal, the issue continues to be a point of discussion and has impacted his aspirations for leadership within the party.

Despite these controversies, Mkhize still commands considerable support in various parts of the ANC, particularly in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal. There, he is recognized as a skilled organizer with strong ties to the grassroots membership. His supporters believe that his extensive experience and knowledge of the party’s workings could help bring stability to the ANC during a period marked by uncertainty and internal power struggles.

Political analysts suggest that Mkhize’s decision to enter the leadership contest is likely to increase the competition and could potentially shift the balance of power among different factions within the party as the elective conference approaches. With the ANC gearing up for a critical leadership selection, his candidacy adds another layer of complexity to an already crowded field. This underscores the significant importance of the upcoming conference as the party seeks to establish a stable and effective path forward.
