Dr. Zweli Mkhize, a former Minister of Health, has officially put his name forward to contest for leadership positions within the African National Congress (ANC). However, his political career faced a significant challenge in 2021 when he had to step down from his ministerial position. This followed allegations connected to a controversial contract for communications services with a company called Digital Vibes. While Mkhize has consistently denied any personal financial gain from this deal, the issue continues to be a point of discussion and has impacted his aspirations for leadership within the party.
Despite these controversies, Mkhize still commands considerable support in various parts of the ANC, particularly in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal. There, he is recognized as a skilled organizer with strong ties to the grassroots membership.
