Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has again heaped praise on young defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi following his standout performance against Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite South Africa’s 1–0 defeat, Broos described the 20-year-old’s display against Mohamed Salah as “special” and proof he belongs at the highest level. The coach reiterated his earlier concern that Mbokazi’s recent move from Orlando Pirates to Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer might not be the best step for his development.
Broos believes Mbokazi has the talent to play in top European leagues like Spain’s La Liga or France’s Ligue 1. While careful not to directly compare him to legends like Vincent Kompany, Broos acknowledged similarities in their defensive profiles.
Looking ahead to Bafana’s final group match against Zimbabwe, Broos said the team will not play for a draw but will focus on securing three points with their established approach.
