A recently emerged video depicting Bitou Municipality Deputy Mayor Nokuzola Kolwapi discharging what appears to be a firearm before passing it to her bodyguard has generated significant public alarm and has initiated an official police inquiry.

The video, which has quickly disseminated on social media platforms, depicts Kolwapi discharging the weapon in an open area while encircled by multiple individuals. Moments later, she is observed handing the firearm to an individual presumed to be her security personnel. The footage has prompted significant concerns regarding firearm safety, legal compliance, and the conduct anticipated of public officials.

In response to the escalating backlash, Kolwapi has asserted that the object depicted in the video was not an authentic firearm but rather a plastic gun. This explanation, however, has scarcely alleviated criticism, as numerous viewers remain sceptical and are calling for independent verification of her assertion.

South African Police Service officials have verified that an investigation is underway to determine whether any laws were violated. Police stated that the investigation would primarily aim to establish the authenticity of the weapon, verify whether Kolwapi holds a valid licence to possess a firearm, and assess whether the discharge of the weapon involved heedless or negligent conduct.

If it is determined that the firearm is authentic, the circumstances surrounding its use will be carefully investigated, a police source stated. No individual is exempt from the law, irrespective of their political status.

The incident has renewed the discussion concerning the use and display of firearms by public officials, especially in a nation dealing with elevated rates of gun-related violence. Legal authorities have observed that firing a weapon in public without a legitimate justification may result in significant criminal penalties if established.

Political analysts assert that the controversy exerts further pressure on the Bitou Municipality, which has encountered governance difficulties in recent years. They contend that the issue extends beyond the question of whether the firearm was genuine, instead addressing aspects of leadership ethics, judgement, and public confidence.

Opposition parties and civil society organisations have urged Kolwapi to resign pending the outcome of investigations, asserting that the incident threatens to undermine the credibility of the municipality. Some have also called upon political parties to implement more rigorous internal discipline when leaders are involved in conduct that damages the reputation of public office.

Kolwapi has not issued a comprehensive statement beyond affirming that the object was a plastic firearm, and it remains uncertain whether she will cooperate with investigators by supplying the item depicted in the video.

As the investigation progresses, the outcome is anticipated to depend on forensic examinations and witness testimonies, with possible legal and political repercussions arising if the allegations regarding a toy pistol are found to be unfounded.
