“We Don’t Like That” Lesufi Receives Backlash For Wearing A T-shirt About Chris Hani

It was a privilege to formally inaugurate the ANC Tshwane Regional Conference, and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi conveyed his best wishes to all attendees in his message. Optimistic about the proceedings, Lesufi urged unity and focus on the tasks at hand while addressing the attendees and the broader public of the province. Nonetheless, the public’s attention was immediately drawn to his outfit choice. Chris Hani, a resistance hero who was slain decades ago, was supported by Lesufi’s T-shirt.

Despite the good intentions behind the homage, several onlookers were critical of the timing and the shirt’s suitability for the political event, leading to a negative reaction. People were quick to express their disapproval of what they saw as a controversial move on social media. Some thought the symbolic nature of the event would detract from the seriousness of the political debates that were supposed to take place at the conference.

Others emphasised the need of prominent personalities being conscious of the signals their public personas transmit. The outcry sparked discussions over the role of historical memory in modern political discourse. There is weight in any public exhibition that invokes Chris Hani’s picture or name since he is still a revered figure in South African history.

The tribute, however well-intentioned, may have belonged at a commemoration event, not a political meeting, said Lesufi’s detractors. In spite of the backlash, Lesufi went ahead with his inaugural speech, pledging to support the province and the ANC’s goals. Continuing to advance developmental aims and address local difficulties should be the utmost priority, he stressed, and he emphasised the need of party members working together.

This incident highlights the fine line that political leaders must walk when combining public duty with symbolism. As the significant reactions to Lesufi’s T-shirt choice show, popular perception often determines the broader narrative, even though recognising influential persons might be meaningful.
