South Africans Outraged: Why Was Witness D Exposed – And Who Benefits From His Silence?

The killing of Marius “Vlam” van der Merwe, known publicly as Witness D in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, has ignited a wave of national outrage, with citizens, activists, and political commentators calling for an urgent and transparent investigation into both his murder and the circumstances surrounding his testimony.

Van der Merwe, 45, was shot dead outside his Brakpan home on 5 December 2025 in front of his wife and children. The attack occurred just weeks after he testified before the commission, where he made serious allegations implicating suspended EMPD acting police chief Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi. His death has amplified public concern about witness safety, state accountability, and the potential intimidation of whistleblowers.

Although police have not confirmed any link between his testimony and the killing, the timing has raised intense public scrutiny. On social media, many South Africans questioned why Witness D’s identity and voice were not fully concealed during his appearance, despite security recommendations made to the commission.

Civil society groups have since issued strong statements demanding answers. “We need clarity, protection mechanisms, and assurance that state institutions are functioning independently and safely,” one advocacy group said, urging authorities to move swiftly.

Critics have also questioned Mkhwanazi’s conduct during earlier appearances, noting his visible discomfort and his decision to publicly identify Witness D despite instructions to refrain. However, legal experts caution the public to avoid drawing premature conclusions while investigations are still underway.

The SAPS confirmed that a specialised task team has been appointed to investigate the murder, stressing that no suspect has yet been identified and urging the public to allow law-enforcement processes to unfold.

Meanwhile, the Madlanga Commission expressed shock and extended condolences to the van der Merwe family, reiterating its commitment to completing its mandate “without fear, favour, or prejudice.” The commission also confirmed that additional witness protection measures are being reviewed.

As the nation grapples with the implications of the killing, one message resonates across public discourse: South Africa deserves a full, urgent, and transparent investigation — not only into the murder of Witness D, but into the broader issues his testimony has brought into the national spotlight.
