A high-level police manhunt is underway following the killing of Marius van der Merwe (pictured), known as Witness D in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. Police have confirmed that an AK47 rifle was used in the attack.
The National Commissioner of Police, General Fannie Masemola, is expected to brief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga on investigative progress, as well as outline enhanced protection measures for individuals linked to the inquiry.
Specialised units were deployed to the Brakpan scene overnight, recovering evidence which authorities believe will assist in tracking down the masterminds behind the hit. Van der Merwe was targeted shortly after returning home with his wife on Friday night. He was shot as he attempted to open their gate, while his wife was not injured.
No valuables were taken, and his belongings were found intact, strengthening suspicions that the killing was premeditated.
Police have opened a murder case and confirmed that efforts are intensifying to trace the perpetrators, the firearm involved, and the person behind the alleged hit order.
