An intelligence-led operation has resulted in the recovery of two firearms stolen from South African Police Service (SAPS) officers who were tragically killed in Ivory Park, Johannesburg, on Friday evening. The recovered weapons include a state-issued R5 rifle and a 9mm pistol, both positively identified as belonging to Sergeant Rapetsoa and Constable Montja, who were attached to the Ivory Park police station.

Following the brutal murders, SAPS deployed maximum resources to track down the perpetrators and recover the stolen firearms. Crime intelligence officers, supported by the Sedibeng Tactical Response Team (TRT) and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (HAWKS), coordinated operations across Tembisa and Mamelodi East, based on detailed intelligence about the suspects’ movements.

In Mamelodi, officers successfully intercepted two Mozambican nationals in possession of the stolen firearms. Alongside the R5 rifle, several rounds of ammunition were also recovered. The weapons were confirmed to be those forcibly taken from the two officers before they were fatally shot. The swift recovery represents a significant breakthrough in an ongoing investigation that has gripped law enforcement and the local community.

Authorities confirmed that the arrested suspects are currently facing charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Further investigations are underway to link them directly to the Ivory Park murders. Police are also actively searching for additional suspects and a second stolen 9mm pistol, which remains unaccounted for.

National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, praised the rapid response and determination of the teams involved. “Our officers worked tirelessly and with exceptional speed to recover the stolen state-issued firearms and to ensure that those responsible for these heinous murders are brought to justice,” Masemola said.

The Ivory Park incident has intensified discussions on officer safety, particularly regarding patrols in high-risk areas. SAPS has reiterated its commitment to protecting its members while maintaining public safety.

Communities are urged to assist law enforcement by reporting suspicious activity and providing information that could lead to the arrest of additional suspects. The recovery of the R5 rifle and 9mm pistol demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-driven policing and multi-agency collaboration, underscoring the SAPS’ ongoing mission to dismantle criminal networks threatening public safety and law enforcement personnel.

Investigators have indicated that further arrests and charges are expected as the probe into the murders and the broader network of criminal activity continues.
