A devastating event has plunged the Mamelodi community into grief. Four members of the same family tragically lost their lives while participating in a traditional cleansing ritual at the Delfie Quarry Dam.

The deceased have been identified as a 51-year-old mother, her 36-year-old daughter, and two sons in their early twenties. Reports indicate that the family had gone to the dam to perform a customary bathing ritual, which holds spiritual significance. Tragically, what was intended as a sacred moment turned into a disaster when all four entered the water and did not resurface.

Another daughter, who remained on the bank and did not enter the water, witnessed the horrific event. Overcome with distress, she immediately sought help. However, by the time emergency services arrived, it was unfortunately too late to save her family members.

Charles Mabaso, spokesperson for Tshwane Emergency Services, confirmed the incident. He stated that rescue divers were deployed and successfully recovered all four bodies from the dam later that day. “This is a deeply tragic event, and the community is devastated. Our deepest condolences go out to the family,” Mabaso added.

The Delfie Quarry Dam area is known to be hazardous due to its deep and unpredictable waters, with inadequate safety measures in place. Despite being a location for traditional rituals and recreation, local residents have previously voiced concerns about the dam’s safety, particularly regarding unsupervised rituals and gatherings.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drownings has been initiated by the authorities. Community leaders have issued an urgent appeal to families and traditional healers to exercise extreme caution when performing rituals that involve open water, especially in isolated or unregulated areas.

The City of Tshwane has extended an offer of trauma counseling to the grieving family and others affected by this devastating loss. Plans for a memorial service are underway and are expected to take place in the coming days.

As the community grapples with this profound sorrow, there is a strong call for increased awareness and the implementation of safety measures around local water bodies to prevent such heart-wrenching incidents from happening again.
