Former criminal intelligence contact agent Brown Mogotsi has provided new information to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry regarding his reasons for believing that General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi was relieved of his position.
Mogotsi informed the commission that he had maintained a close working relationship with former Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa over many years. He stated that they frequently discussed intelligence matters, including a journey he undertook to Kenya to assist with his responsibilities. Mogotsi stated that he financed this travel personally and did not seek reimbursement, as he believed he was performing a service to the nation.
He further stated that during one of these private conversations, Mthethwa informed him that Mkhwanazi was removed from the position of Acting National Commissioner due to suspicions among certain individuals that he may have had affiliations with the CIA. Mogotsi also stated that Mthethwa indicated his preparedness to appear before the commission and provide a detailed explanation of this decision.
The commission, however, affirmed that at no point did the late Nathi Mthethwa contact them or express any intention of participating as a witness. Consequently, they are unable to verify whether he genuinely intended to testify or whether he endorsed the statements attributed to Mogotsi.
These recent allegations further substantiate the extensive array of concerns previously raised during Mogotsi’s appearance. His testimony has addressed matters concerning intelligence operations, political connections, and the challenges within South Africa’s law enforcement system. The commission continues to review evidence as the nation awaits further information regarding these significant concerns.
