Broos: Why I Always Trust This Orlando Pirates Star

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has shed more light on his selection choices and tactical experiments following South Africa’s recent victory over Zambia in an international friendly. While the match ended in a positive result, Broos made it clear that these games are not just about winning — they are crucial opportunities to test new combinations, new partnerships, and the reliability of certain players under pressure.

Broos explained that friendlies allow him the freedom to rotate players without fear of dropping important competitive points. For him, this is the ideal moment to identify who can be trusted in major qualifiers and tournaments. One player who continues to stand out in his plans is a reliable Orlando Pirates star, whom he praised for consistently stepping up whenever called upon. According to Broos, this player has demonstrated maturity, discipline, and commitment, making him a dependable option in almost every match situation.

The Belgian coach admitted that the team is still a work in progress, and experimenting is a necessary part of long-term success. Although some fans and pundits expected a more stable lineup, Broos insisted that without experimentation, the squad would never evolve. He emphasised the importance of building depth, especially with the AFCON qualifiers and World Cup campaign on the horizon. To him, identifying multiple effective combinations is better than relying on the same few players every time.

Broos also highlighted that Zambia provided a competitive test, and the match exposed both strengths and weaknesses within the Bafana squad. While the win was encouraging, the coach pointed out that there were phases of the game where focus dropped and decision-making became sloppy. Still, he viewed these moments positively, saying they help him understand which players can adapt and recover under pressure.

A key part of Broos’ message was directed at critics who questioned his lineup changes. He made it clear that he has a long-term vision that goes beyond a single friendly match. In his words, international football requires courage, and a coach must be brave enough to make unpopular decisions if they help the team grow. He stressed that the objective is not short-term applause but building a stable and competitive Bafana Bafana capable of challenging Africa’s best teams.

As he reflected on the Pirates star’s performance, Broos praised the player’s attitude and reliability. In his view, having such dependable individuals is what strengthens the core of the squad. He hinted that this player will remain an important part of his plans moving forward, especially because he consistently delivers regardless of the match context.

Broos concluded by saying that as long as friendlies are available, he will continue using them to test, rotate, and refine his squad. To him, every minute on the pitch provides valuable information needed to shape a strong Bafana Bafana for the future.
