Residents and activists in Mamelodi protested outside the local magistrate’s court this week, demanding stricter measures against gender-based violence and calling for the reinstatement of the death penalty. The demonstration coincided with the court appearance of a 40-year-old man accused of raping his neighbour.

The suspect, who remains in custody pending a formal bail application, allegedly attacked the victim while she was walking home. Community activists expressed frustration over persistent violence against women in the area, describing the situation as a “humanitarian crisis.”

Protest organizers stated they were not merely asking the court to deny bail but were demanding capital punishment for serious offenders. They also highlighted inadequate safety measures in their community, including non-functional surveillance cameras and insufficient police patrols.

The case follows another recent violent incident in Mamelodi where two cousins were killed, further fueling community concerns about safety and justice.
