Students at the University of the Witwatersrand protested late Monday night into Tuesday, November 11, 2025, demanding justice for a first-year student allegedly raped by SRC member Musawenkosi Mavuso, affiliated with the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command.
The demonstrations highlighted prior complaints against Mavuso, including sexual harassment, which protesters claim were ignored during his election last month.
Hundreds united with chants and signs against gender-based violence, criticizing the SRC and university for inaction amid South Africa’s ongoing campus safety crisis.
I just found out that a Wits student was allegedly raped by a male SRC member who already had previous allegations. Students marched around 10pm last night & there’s another march at 9am this morning (11Nov). What do you have to say? @Wits_SRC pic.twitter.com/FrRcZPDDdf

It is alleged that a BEd student deployed by the EFFYC to the SRC at the University of Wits allegedly raped a 20-year-old student yesterday. Students protested outside the residence of the alleged perpetrator. #SayNoToGBV #GBVmustfall #16DaysOfActivism pic.twitter.com/E8FBJEbiIR
