In a rare public display of cross-party rapport, a photo of African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) President Julius Malema sharing a smiling, thumbs-up moment has gone viral on social media.
The image, posted by Malema with the cryptic caption “just for control,” presents a stark contrast to the often hostile and acrimonious exchanges between their parties in Parliament. The lighthearted photo immediately triggered a wave of public speculation about its underlying meaning.
Political analysts suggest the gesture is likely a calculated move. “Julius knows how to command attention,” said commentator Thandi Masilela, noting it could be an effort to shift narratives or temporarily ease political tensions. The photo showcases Malema’s flair for political theater and Mbalula’s own reputation for social media savvy.
However, the reception within their parties may be mixed. While the public image suggests camaraderie, ANC insiders expressed skepticism, with one source cautioning that “it’s one thing to pose for a picture, another to build bridges.” The EFF, for its part, has remained silent, allowing the image to speak for itself.
The viral moment underscores the complex dynamics of South African politics, where public posturing and back-channel engagements often coexist. Whether this signals a potential thaw in relations or is merely a clever piece of political optics remains an open question, reminding the public that human moments can, if only briefly, puncture the rigid facade of political rivalry.
