Controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is expected to appear before the High Court in Johannesburg to challenge the decision by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court denying him bail earlier this month.
Matlala, who faces multiple fraud and corruption charges, has been in custody since his arrest in August following a joint operation by the Hawks and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department. The charges stem from allegations involving irregular tenders and financial misconduct linked to a series of municipal contracts.
In his initial bail application, the court ruled that Matlala posed both a flight risk and a potential threat to witnesses, citing the seriousness of the allegations and the ongoing nature of investigations. His legal team has since argued that the magistrate erred in law and fact, insisting that their client should be granted bail under strict conditions.
The State, however, is expected to oppose the appeal, maintaining that Matlala’s release could compromise the integrity of the investigation.
The High Court will hear arguments from both sides this week, in a case that has drawn significant public interest due to Matlala’s political and business connections across Gauteng.
