The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has indicated that it is currently conducting an investigation into the awarding of numerous tenders, including the contentious R3.5 billion Swifambo Rail locomotives contract. In 2017, the courts invalidated the contract, which was intended to procure locomotives for South Africa’s rail system, as a result of substantial irregularities in the tender process.
SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago has verified that the unit’s investigation is designed to identify any instances of mismanagement or wrongdoing in the awarding of the Swifambo contract and other tenders.
