Correctional Services Liable After Inmate Assaulted With Kettle

The Western Cape High Court has found the Department of Correctional Services liable for damages after inmate Nathaniel Hendricks was attacked with a kettle provided under a “humanitarian” initiative.
The court ruled that officials failed to ensure inmate safety, saying goodwill could not excuse negligence in a high-risk environment. Compensation will be determined at a later stage.
