Political Party Files Hate Speech Complaint Against Ngizwe Mchunu for Anti-Gay Comments

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has filed a formal complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission (HRC) against media personality Ngizwe Mchunu.

The complaint stems from a video Mchunu posted on social media criticizing a gay couple who married in traditional Zulu attire. In the video, Mchunu made derogatory comments, calling a man who sleeps with another man “rubbish” and suggesting that gay people, including media personality Somizi, should “leave this country.”

The UDM’s complaint argues that Mchunu’s statements constitute hate speech and incite violence against the LGBTQIA+ community. The party stated that the video, which has since been deleted, garnered over a million views and prompted comments calling for violence against queer people.

Mchunu, a former Ukhozi FM presenter, is known for his advocacy of Zulu culture and was previously linked to the July 2021 unrest. He has not yet publicly responded to the complaint.
