The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry is set to hear from a fourth witness as it continues to investigate allegations of political interference in South Africa’s criminal justice system.
A key focus of the probe is the controversial disbandment of the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team. On Thursday, the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) own Legal Services division testified before the commission that the decision to disband the specialized unit was unlawful.
The task team had been responsible for investigating a number of high-profile political murders in the province before it was shut down.
The commission was established to examine claims of criminality and undue political influence within law enforcement agencies.
