Former Western Cape Premier Helen Zille has been officially nominated as the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) mayoral candidate for the City of Johannesburg in the 2026 local government elections. The announcement was made at a lively event in Soweto on Saturday, where supporters and party leaders gathered to welcome her candidacy.

DA federal leader John Steenhuisen introduced Zille as “a daughter of the city,” saying:

“Can we build the Jozi we all love? Yes, we can! And so it is with great pride, and even greater urgency, that I re-introduce to you… your very own DA mayoral candidate for Johannesburg: Helen Zille.”

The event also featured addresses from DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga and DA Johannesburg chairperson Wendy Alexander.

Zille’s nomination comes after weeks of public speculation. In June, she confirmed in an interview with IOL that she was “contemplating running for mayor” after being approached to put her “hat in the ring” and consulting with her family.

The move has drawn support from unexpected quarters. Political analyst Prince Mashele, in a July interview on the SMWX podcast with Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh, pledged he would publicly endorse Zille if she became the DA’s mayoral candidate.

“Look, if Helen Zille wins the contest to become the mayoral candidate of Johannesburg, I am going to do something I have never done in my life. I am going to publicly endorse her,” Mashele said.
“This is big… Johannesburg used to be the pride of Africa. Parks Tau was part of the destruction of this city.”

Zille, who served as Mayor of Cape Town and Premier of the Western Cape, acknowledged the challenges ahead in Johannesburg. She noted the city faces an infrastructure backlog of R200 billion, an annual budget of R86 billion, and a municipal workforce that has grown 86% since 2010. Nevertheless, she expressed confidence in her ability to lead the city and restore it to its former status as a thriving metropolis.

With the 2026 local government elections approaching, the nomination of Helen Zille is expected to shape the political landscape in Johannesburg, with all eyes on whether the DA’s choice will resonate with voters eager for change.
