KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has filed a R5 million defamation lawsuit against forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan.
The legal action follows repeated public statements by O’Sullivan in which he accused Mkhwanazi of being a “criminal” and called for his suspension from the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The lawsuit marks a significant escalation in the ongoing public dispute between the high-ranking police official and the well-known private investigator. Defamation cases of this magnitude are relatively rare between public figures and private citizens. The outcome of the case will be closely watched, as it sits at the intersection of public accountability and protection against reputational damage.
