KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will be the first witness to testify when the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry begins its public hearings on September 17th in Pretoria.

The judicial commission, chaired by Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, was established to investigate serious allegations of police misconduct, political interference, and systemic weaknesses within South African law enforcement. Its mandate includes probing high-profile cases of political violence and corruption linked to policing.

As one of the country’s most senior police officials, General Mkhwanazi is expected to provide crucial testimony on the operational challenges facing the police service in KZN. His evidence will likely address the effectiveness of specialized units and allegations of political influence in policing decisions.

Insiders suggest his testimony will set the tone for the entire inquiry, as he has been directly involved in handling some of the province’s most sensitive cases, including political killings and organized crime.

The commission has generated significant public interest, with various groups calling for transparency and accountability. Justice Madlanga has urged all participants to prioritize truth and solutions, stating the goal is to “chart a way forward for a police service that serves all South Africans without fear or favour.”

The inquiry is scheduled to run for several months, with its findings and recommendations expected to be presented to Parliament in early 2026.
