Mkhwanazi Summoned To Important Parliament Meeting to Prove His Claims Against Senzo Mchunu

In order to back up his startling claims of corruption and intervention in the South African Police Service (SAPS) and judiciary, members of parliament (MPs) have demanded that KwaZuluNatal Police Commissioner LieutenantGeneral Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi testify before an ad hoc committee.

As President Cyril Ramaphosa has stated, the action occurs at a time of increased public attention toward Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is accused of interfering in delicate investigations and is now on a leave of absence. Advocate Andile Tetyana, Parliament’s legal counsel, pointed out that Mchunu is not legally protected from appearing before the committee despite his leave, indicating a thorough parliamentary investigation into the allegations.

The parliamentary campaign for an ad hoc committee, supported by the justice and police portfolio committees, seeks to efficiently probe Mkhwanazi’s claims without replicating the Judicial Commission of Inquiry formed by Ramaphosa, which some lawmakers have called a waste of resources. Noting the need to address the claims directly, justice committee member Sibonelo Nomvalo stated, “If we start our procedure by calling the complainant, who is General Mkhwanazi. ” Next week, the committee’s creation will be completed by the National Assembly.

This occurrence coincides with a sad incident in eThekwini, where a man was burned beyond recognition on Friday while reportedly tampering with a municipal power plant along South Coast Road. The incident highlights continuing issues with infrastructure security in the area, following the deaths of two men in a related occurrence at an Isiphingo substation on Monday. As police continue to investigate both incidents, the eThekwini Municipality has advised locals to report anything they see that seems suspicious in order to avert more catastrophes.

The recent power station occurrences and Mkhwanazi’s accusations serve to highlight a more widespread issue of trust and security in KwaZuluNatal. If Mkhwanazi is hurt, members of parliament—including those from the EFF and MK Party—have warned of widespread civil upheaval.
