The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, established to investigate serious allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, is set to begin its public hearings on September 17, 2025.

The commission’s start date was announced alongside several major developments that have intensified the political drama surrounding the case.

EFF leader Julius Malema made a strong public statement regarding General Mkhwanazi’s scheduled appearance before a separate parliamentary ad hoc committee. Malema’s comments have added a significant political dimension to the process.

In a related matter, former senior police official Shadrack Sibiya lost his court application to be reinstated to his post. Sibiya’s case is tangentially linked to the wider themes of alleged political interference within the police service that the commission is expected to investigate.

These events ensure that the commission will begin its work under intense public and political scrutiny. The inquiry was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa to probe General Mkhwanazi’s claims of criminal infiltration at the highest levels of the South African government and police force.
