Magistrate of Remedial Administrations Makgothi Thobale has stated unequivocally that former President Jacob Zuma is now being held in Escourt Prison. In a significant development that took place this morning at six o’clock, Zuma was taken into custody and processed at the office. This suggests that the judicial actions that resulted in his original detention will continue at some point in the future.

The situation of Zuma has attracted attention not only domestically but also internationally because it shows the delicate balance that must be maintained between maintaining law and order and recognising the privileges of a notable person. After serving a term of clinical parole, which raised discussions over the appropriateness of his delivery, he was then sentenced to return to prison.

The proclamation made by Magistrate Thobale highlights the principle that the rules that apply to everyone, regardless of their rank, must be obeyed by everyone. There is no exception to this norm. The circumstance surrounding Zuma is illustrative of the inherent problems that come with owning equity in a system that is dependent on votes. As the legal interaction moves on, it is probable that this case will continue to serve as a focal point for discussions surrounding the equality framework in South Africa as well as the larger implications for administration and accountability.
