Political Tension: Zuma Calls For President Ramaphosa’s Arrest

Jacob Zuma, the former president of South Africa, has escalated his political conflict with President Cyril Ramaphosa, making a public appeal for his arrest, citing criminal behaviour and what he perceives to be a betrayal of the South African people. The latest statements made by Zuma have served to exacerbate an existing schism inside the African National Congress (ANC), which is the party now in power. This schism is a threat to the party’s unity as it approaches important political milestones that will take place before the elections in 2026.

During his speech at a political meeting that the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party held over the weekend, Zuma charged that Ramaphosa had subverted the Constitution and had put the nation in danger by corrupt and improper behaviour. He made the argument that the conduct of the current president, especially with regard to the Phala Phala controversy, constitute a blatant breach of the law.

Zuma addressed supporters and said, “The sitting president has broken the law, and yet he walks freely while ordinary citizens face arrest for far less.” “Cyril Ramaphosa ought to be apprehended and held accountable, just as any other South African citizen who breaks the law would be.”

The Phala Phala controversy, which broke out in 2022, pertains to the discovery of substantial amounts of undeclared foreign currency that was reportedly stashed on Ramaphosa’s farm in Limpopo. For a long time, opposition parties and civil society groups have been asking for clarification on whether the funds were declared legally and why the problem was not referred to law enforcement. Despite the fact that he has been the subject of many investigations, Ramaphosa has maintained his innocence and asserted that he has provided full cooperation to all of the probes.

Zuma, on the other hand, maintains that the matter of Ramaphosa has been handled in an unfair manner. Zuma made the accusation that the state was sheltering Ramaphosa while simultaneously prosecuting Zuma and his associates. He drew parallels to his own legal fights, which include persistent corruption charges and his 2021 incarceration for contempt of court.

“Justice must be applied without discrimination. The courts proceed with efficiency when the defendant is me. Zuma stated that “but when it is Ramaphosa, the system delays and protects him,” to thunderous cheers from his followers.

According to analysts, the demand made by Zuma for the arrest of Ramaphosa is not simply related to legal accountability; it is also part of a broader strategy to undermine the credibility of the president and to improve the MK Party’s position in anticipation of future elections. The MK Party, which was established under the patronage of Zuma, has positioned itself as an alternative to the African National Congress (ANC), taking advantage of the discontentment that exists among populations that feel estranged by the leadership of the party in power.

As of yet, the African National Congress has not released an official statement responding to the most recent comments made by Zuma. Political commentators caution, on the other hand, that the use of increasingly incendiary rhetoric could further destroy the African National Congress’s image, particularly in light of the fact that the continuation of factional conflicts continues to take precedence over governance goals.

Zuma’s calls for Ramaphosa’s arrest have introduced even another layer of political drama to a country that is already enduring a great deal of stress due to its ongoing problems with unemployment, crime, and corruption. It is yet unclear whether law enforcement officials will take any action, but it is beyond doubt that the calls have unquestionably intensified the political fight between two of the most powerful personalities in South Africa’s democratic era.
