ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula has responded to comments made by International Relations Minister Naledi Pandor regarding leadership within the party.
Minister Pandor recently spoke at a governance event and warned against a growing culture of self-interest among some leaders. She suggested that internal factional battles and corruption scandals are harming ethical leadership. Although she did not name anyone, her remarks started a debate inside the party.
In response, Mbalula acknowledged that Pandor is a respected leader with the right to express her views. However, he cautioned that such comments must be framed carefully to avoid damaging public trust in the ANC.
Mbalula stated that the party is dedicated to renewal and ethical governance. He pointed to the party’s “step-aside” rule and other disciplinary actions against members accused of corruption as proof that it is addressing wrongdoing.
He also denied that Pandor’s comments reveal major divisions within the ANC ahead of next year’s local elections, calling the party a place for robust discussion.
Political analysts see Pandor’s remarks as a sign of concern over the ANC’s struggle to restore public trust. They suggest it may reflect internal frustration with the slow pace of reform and serve as a warning to party leadership before the elections.
Mbalula concluded by saying the ANC accepts constructive criticism but rejects the idea that the party is beyond repair. This exchange happens as the ANC prepares for a key leadership meeting next month.
