Veterinary Council Reports Steenhuisen to Ramaphosa for ‘Overstepping’ His Mandate

The South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) has filed a formal complaint with President Cyril Ramaphosa against Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen, accusing him of overstepping his authority and interfering in its regulatory work.

In a strongly worded letter, the council alleged that Steenhuisen’s actions bordered on illegality by meddling in professional matters under its exclusive authority. While specific details were not fully disclosed, the dispute is believed to center on Steenhuisen’s recent comments about veterinary oversight and animal health standards.

The SAVC stated that veterinary governance is a matter of public safety and scientific integrity, not politics, and it strongly objects to any political interference.

This direct appeal to the president is an unusual step, highlighting how seriously the council views the issue. The complaint could spark a broader debate about the boundaries between political leadership and independent professional bodies.

Steenhuisen’s office has not yet issued a public response, but DA insiders have privately dismissed the complaint as an effort to politicize a technical issue.

The Presidency confirmed it received the letter but declined further comment while it reviews the matter. The situation places pressure on President Ramaphosa to decide whether to investigate the allegations or dismiss the complaint.
