The South African Department of Defence has issued a clarification regarding the recent official visit of SANDF Chief General Rudzani Maphwanya to Iran.
The department stated that Defence Minister Angie Motshekga authorized the trip, which was to honor an invitation from Iranian officials that had been postponed from 2024. The visit was described as a step to strengthen international military relations.
During the visit, General Maphwanya held bilateral talks with Iranian military leaders and toured a defence research facility. The discussions focused on issues of mutual concern and potential military cooperation.
In line with the confidential nature of such diplomatic engagements, Maphwanya did not address the media. Instead, he submitted a detailed report to Minister Motshekga upon his return, who expressed satisfaction with the outcomes.
SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini confirmed the reporting process, stating the chief submitted the report due to the significant public interest in the visit. The Department of Defence said it would not provide further comment on the matter.
