Minister Criticized for Appointing Figures Linked to Scandal to Skills Training Authority

Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela is facing strong criticism for appointing several ANC figures to lead the Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA). The appointees were previously linked to an R800 million corruption scandal.

The decision has caused outrage among citizens and watchdog groups, who argue that placing individuals with tainted reputations in charge of a critical institution undermines the fight against corruption. SETAs manage billions of public funds intended for skills development and training programs across South Africa.

Critics say the appointments show a disregard for accountability and risk damaging public trust in programs vital for the country’s workforce development. Supporters of the move counter that the individuals are only accused, not proven guilty, and deserve a chance to prove themselves.

The controversy highlights the ongoing challenge of political patronage and corruption in South Africa, casting a shadow over the government’s stated commitment to clean governance.
