KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has stated that a significant number of hired gunmen used in crimes come from the Mzinyathi district, driven by poverty and a lack of opportunities.

Speaking at a community safety event, the commissioner explained that unemployment and desperate economic conditions are pushing young men in rural areas toward destructive choices. Criminal networks exploit this desperation by offering fast money and status, trapping them in a cycle of crime that is difficult to escape.

Mkhwanazi emphasized that police action alone cannot solve the problem. He called for a combined effort from families, schools, and community leaders to prevent youth from being lured into crime. He urged parents to speak openly with their children about these dangers.

While noting that police operations and community partnerships have led to several arrests and are disrupting syndicates, the commissioner stressed that long-term solutions like education, mentorship, and job creation are essential to address the root causes of the problem.
