KZN Politics: Zuma Ally Hints at Ditching Party, Says “I’m Committed to Amakhosi”

A major political storm could soon break out in KwaZulu-Natal. Natal, renowned for his connections to traditional elders and a close associate of former president Jacob Zuma, has fuelled speculation about widening political divides. Natal has dropped hints that he may disassociate himself from his party. “I am committed to Amakhosi first, before any party politics,” the divisive politician declared at a recent traditional council gathering.

In a province where loyalties to both political parties and long-standing authority run deep, the remark nonetheless managed to make waves, no matter how subtle. A long-time intermediary between the MK Party and traditional leaders, the unnamed Zuma supporter played a pivotal role in energising rural voters for the 2024 election.

He appears weary of party politics, and traditional leaders are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with being neglected on crucial governance issues, so there may be internal unrest. Analysts interpret his remarks as a probable signal of a move away from official party structures and towards a platform driven by traditional leadership. This could lead to changes in voter dynamics in the future elections in rural areas.

According to political analyst Lindiwe Mthembu, “this is more than personal frustration — it’s a potential realignment of rural political influence.” If politicians in KZN who are linked with Zuma choose to prioritise traditional traditions over party loyalty, the state’s power blocs could undergo a transformation. The MK Party is reportedly in a haste to contain the fallout from the comments because party insiders are concerned that the comments may cause further discord among the party’s rural supporters.

As of this writing, the party has not commented officially on the remarks. However, there are Amakhosi who support the position; some have even gone to extreme lengths to call for greater autonomy and political representation. Because of the high-stakes circumstances in the province involving the clash of traditional authority and political allegiance, KZN is currently under the focus.
