KZN Police Commissioner’s Corruption Claims Spark Outcry – DA Criticizes Handling of Allegations

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has ignited a political firestorm after accusing high-ranking officials—including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu—of colluding with crime syndicates. During a July 6 press briefing, Mkhwanazi alleged systemic corruption in law enforcement, suggesting the dismantling of a key crime unit was meant to shield those involved in organized crime and politically linked killings.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has sharply criticized Mkhwanazi’s approach. Glynnis Breytenbach, the party’s justice spokesperson, questioned why he aired the claims publicly rather than through official channels like Parliament’s police portfolio committee. “There are proper forums for such serious allegations,” she said.

Breytenbach also raised concerns over Mkhwanazi’s presentation, noting his police combat gear and armed entourage created an “unnecessary militarized tone.” Meanwhile, an ad hoc committee has been formed to probe the explosive claims, which could deepen scrutiny on South Africa’s policing and political structures.

The allegations come amid longstanding concerns over corruption and instability in KZN, a province plagued by political violence. Neither Mchunu nor other implicated officials have yet responded publicly.
