Malema Claims Pattern in EFF Exits as Mkhwebane, Mpofu & Manyi Defect to MK Party

EFF leader Julius Malema has framed the recent departure of high-profile members – including Busisiwe Mkhwebane, Dali Mpofu and Jimmy Manyi – as part of a coordinated “recruitment-and-exit cycle” tied to specific leaders, reigniting debates about loyalty within the radical opposition party.

In an interview with Eyewitness News, Malema suggested the former members’ moves to the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party followed the same pattern as their initial recruitment: “Mkhwebane came through Mpofu and Shivambu, Manyi through Shivambu. They left together, just as they arrived.”

The exits represent a significant brain drain for the EFF:

  • Mpofu served as national chairperson and chief legal strategist

  • Mkhwebane brought her Public Protector credibility

  • Manyi added government communication expertise

Political analyst Asanda Ngoasheng observes: “Malema is trying to spin this as ideological housecleaning, but it exposes the EFF’s vulnerability when charismatic figures build personal followings within the party.”

The defections come as the EFF prepares for 2024 elections and faces:
✔️ Growing competition from MK and other radical groups
✔️ Questions about internal democracy
✔️ Pressure to prove it’s more than just Malema’s personality cult

While Malema loyalists applaud his framing as necessary for discipline, former EFF treasurer Leigh-Ann Mathys countered: “This isn’t about principles – it’s about centralizing control as dissent grows.”

The MK party has capitalized on the influx of EFF veterans, with insiders suggesting more defections may follow. As the political realignment continues, analysts warn the EFF risks losing its claim as the dominant voice of radical economic transformation unless it addresses underlying tensions beyond mere rhetoric about loyalty.

Malema’s comments appear aimed at drawing a line under the departures, but with South Africa’s opposition landscape becoming increasingly fluid, the long-term impact may depend on whether the EFF can retain its activist base while professionalizing its leadership structures.
