Professor Firoz Cachalia will be officially sworn in as a member of the National Executive on Friday, 1 August 2025, at the Union Buildings, the Presidency has confirmed. The ceremony, scheduled for 09h00, will be broadcast live on all official government platforms.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to appoint Cachalia as Acting Minister of Police immediately after the swearing-in, exercising his constitutional powers under section 91(3)(c). The move comes amid growing public demand for stronger leadership in South Africa’s criminal justice system.

A respected legal scholar and former MP, Cachalia brings decades of experience in constitutional governance and public administration. His appointment is seen as an effort to stabilize the Police Ministry, which has faced challenges including operational inefficiencies and political interference allegations.

The timing coincides with upcoming parliamentary discussions on police reform, suggesting the administration’s prioritization of law enforcement restructuring. While the appointment has drawn mixed reactions from political parties, supporters highlight Cachalia’s track record in institutional reform as crucial for the ministry’s turnaround.

Analysts note the appointment signals Ramaphosa’s commitment to technocratic leadership, though its effectiveness will depend on Cachalia’s ability to navigate complex policing structures and political dynamics. All eyes will be on the new minister’s first moves in addressing pressing issues like crime intelligence capabilities and community policing models.

The swearing-in ceremony marks a significant moment in South Africa’s ongoing efforts to strengthen governance and public safety institutions.
