A Mozambican domestic worker employed by a wealthy Richards Bay family has disappeared along with valuables worth R100,000. The theft occurred while the homeowners were at work.

The stolen items include cellphones, a laptop, designer handbags, and expensive sneakers. CCTV footage captured the worker leaving the property with two suitcases allegedly containing the stolen goods.

Local authorities have launched an investigation but have yet to locate the suspect. The incident has raised concerns about domestic worker screening processes among affluent households in the area.

Police are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the recovery of the stolen items and the apprehension of the suspect. The family has declined to comment while the investigation is ongoing.

This case follows several similar incidents in KwaZulu-Natal, prompting calls for improved security measures when employing domestic workers. Victims’ advocacy groups suggest employers consider biometric access systems and proper background checks.
